How to Get a Motorcycle Licence in NSW: A Step-by-Step Guide

Thinking about getting your motorcycle licence in New South Wales? Whether you’re dreaming of weekend coastal cruises or tackling twisty mountain roads, the journey starts with earning your licence. The process might feel a little daunting at first, but once you know the steps, it’s straightforward.

Here’s everything you need to know about getting your motorcycle licence in NSW.

Step 1: Check Eligibility

To get a motorcycle licence in NSW, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years and 9 months old to start the process.

  • Hold a current NSW residential address.

  • Be able to pass an eyesight test.

Step 2: Complete the Pre-Learner Course

Before you can ride, you’ll need to complete the Pre-Learner Course, which runs for 2 days (3.5 hours each day).

  • This course teaches the basics: bike controls, balance, braking, and safe riding techniques.

  • It’s run at approved training centres across NSW.

  • Once you pass, you’ll receive a certificate valid for 3 months.

Where to Do Your Pre-Learner Course

The Pre-Learner Course is run at approved training centres across NSW. A few popular providers include:

  • HART (Honda Australia Rider Training) – Locations in St Ives and Somersby.

  • Stay Upright – Operating in Newcastle, Wollongong, and other regional centres.

  • Sydney Motorcycle Training – Several sites across Sydney.

These centres are accredited by Transport for NSW and offer the Pre-Learner, Pre-Provisional, and MOST tests.

Step 3: Rider Knowledge Test (RKT)

Next, book in for the Rider Knowledge Test at a Service NSW Centre.

  • This is a computer-based test on road rules and motorcycle-specific safety.

  • Once you pass, you can apply for your Learner Rider Licence (L’s).

Step 4: Learner Rider Licence (L’s)

As a learner, there are a few restrictions you’ll need to follow:

  • You must display L plates.

  • You can only ride learner-approved motorcycles (LAMS).

  • You must not exceed 90 km/h.

  • No passengers allowed.

  • Blood alcohol limit: 0.00.

You’ll need to hold your learner licence for at least 3 months before moving on.

Step 5: Pre-Provisional Course (MOST Test)

When you’re ready, you’ll complete the Pre-Provisional Course, which includes the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test (MOST).

  • The course takes 6 hours and covers advanced riding skills.

  • The MOST test checks your ability to control the bike — braking, cornering, hazard avoidance, and low-speed manoeuvres.

  • Once you pass, you’ll be issued a Provisional P1 Rider Licence (P’s).

Step 6: Provisional Licences

  • P1 Licence (Red P’s): Must be held for at least 12 months.

  • P2 Licence (Green P’s): Must be held for at least 24 months.

Restrictions ease as you progress, but LAMS-approved bikes still apply until you’re on a full licence.

Step 7: Full Rider Licence

After completing your provisional period (a minimum of 3 years combined), you can upgrade to a full unrestricted motorcycle licence. At this point, you’ll have full riding freedom in NSW.
